India reiterated on Friday that developed nations must recognize their historical responsibility in the climate crisis and must act now to combat it. India’s Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav said the BRICS nations have a vital role to play in tackling the global challenges of the environment and climate change. The BRICS nations include Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
The theme of the meeting was “Fostering a high quality BRICS partnership, ushering in a new era for global development”.

“BRICS initiatives can help promote sustainable development. Developed countries must recognize their responsibility in the climate crisis and there is a need for equity to combat it,” the Indian minister said.
During the discussion on “Joining Hands to Facilitate Green and Low Carbon Development”, India said existing BRICS initiatives can also help promote sustainable and low carbon development.
“BRICS countries can explore cooperation on solar energy, industry transition, infrastructure and climate resilience,” the Indian minister said.

He stressed the responsibility of developed countries to consume the carbon budget; equity at all scales in climate action and sustainable development; lifestyle and curbing unsustainable consumption, to mitigate climate change; Common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capacities (CBDR-RC); national circumstances and priorities; climate justice and compliance with the commitments made by developed countries on climate finance and technology transfer.
Highlighting India’s climate action, the minister said BRICS-led initiatives should be country-driven and voluntary, and stressed the need for international cooperation and multilateralism.
The joint statement for the 8th Meeting of BRICS Ministers of the Environment was adopted at the meeting following a heated deliberation among the BRICS nations.
