Starship completes one million standalone deliveries
Today I am proud to announce that we have reached one million standalone deliveries, more than 6 years after founding the company in 2014. We believe that no other company in the world has completed so many standalone deliveries, including standalone taxi rides. We have also raised an additional $ 17 million and added service to two new campuses: UCLA and Bridgewater State University (Massachusetts) in the US. This new investment brings Starship’s total funding to $ 102 million so far.
We weren’t sure where delivery number 1 was supposed to be, as there are between 15 and 20 service areas open worldwide, with robots making deliveries every minute. In the end, it took place in Bowling Green, Ohio, to a student named Annika Keeton who is a freshman studying Pre-Health Biology at BGSU. Annika is now part of the Starship story!
Six years ago we would not have thought that we would reach the delivery of 1 million in January 2021; we wish we had arrived sooner! But it turns out that getting delivery robots to operate with a high degree of autonomy in several countries, 24 hours a day, 7 days a day, making thousands of deliveries a day and millions of miles a year is difficult. . Fortunately, we have an incredibly talented team at Starship and I am grateful that this milestone is achievable. It may have taken us 6 years to reach the first million deliveries, but hopefully the next million will take just a few months!
Today we also launched UCLA, considered one of the best public schools in the US, and we deliver restaurants like Blaze Pizza, Bruin Buzz, Lu Valle and Southern Lights. Bridgewater State University (Massachusetts) also offers delivery from on-campus restaurants such as Starbucks Cafe and Bears Den.
The additional funding comes at a time of growing interest in the self-delivery industry. Contactless delivery has proven to be one of the most reliable ways to protect vulnerable populations and allow for social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic. We are proud to offer contactless grocery and food deliveries at such a difficult time for so many people. Demand has multiplied by 5 in neighborhoods since the start of the pandemic.
We’ve continued to see exponential growth since we started our first commercial delivery service in 2018. Last year, Starship set several new delivery records within the company and expanded to more college campuses, such as Arizona State University (ASU), the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) and UC Irvine. In addition to opening the service in Mountain View, CA, we also started deliveries in Modesto, CA with our new partner, The Save Mart Companies.
If you are interested in solving difficult challenges and want to have a positive impact on local communities as well as the environment, we would love to hear from you, as we are hiring for various positions right now. We plan to grow the Starship team by 40 to 50 percent this year alone. Forward in 2021!
