A woman who landed in custody for a package of cannabis herb on her way home received a minimum fine of 500 euros after admitting to importing the drug without the necessary license.
Annabel Fernandez, 35, who moved to Malta to work in the medical sector, landed in the hot water after the drug, which she had ordered for personal use, was intercepted by the package service. .
The addressee was arrested and questioned by police.
On Tuesday, after the appearance, he registered an admission to import the drug without the necessary license according to the law.
His lawyer, Stefano Filletti, argued that possession of the drug itself was not illegal, as the accused could freely own and even sell cannabis in Malta.
Importing the drug without a license was a crime, Filletti said, adding that the restriction did not usually apply to the EU.
In addition, the woman had a clear criminal record, had filed an early conviction and the amount indicated that it was obviously for personal use.
After hearing the allegations about the sentence, the court, presided over by Magistrate Noel Bartolo, found the accused guilty of admitting them and imposed a fine of 500 euros.
